When things go wrong in policing chances are the taxpayer is going to end up paying to get the mistakes fixed. Here is a news report relating to New Bedford Police and fixing their issues around informant management. This follows a not of press coverage including a well worth listening to podcast from the Boston Globe.
I am not here to criticise the amount consultants charge. Once a city gets themselves into this sort of trouble they have to pay to get out of the mess.
However, perhaps if the Chief of police had been prepared to pay to build an effective informant management system and to train his staff before this all went sideways it could have saved a lot of money and would definitely have saved the reputation of New Bedford Police. I am not sure that either report that have been commissioned will do that.
It is much better to invest to prevent problems rather that pay to fix the mess when it has all gone wrong.
At HSM we provide both consultancy and training services - we will tell you whats wrong and we will give your staff the tools to fix it. We have spent years over 30 years researching how to manage confidential informants effectively. We have real expertise. We know the pitfalls. You may not always like what we tell you but we will tell you what you need and we will train your staff to the highest standards. We provide training and consultancy in relation to human sources (Confidential informants) in the USA and on an international basis.
If it has got to the stage where you know you are in a mess please call us so we can start to fix it before it gets out of control. Take a look at our books there is a lot of good information there to give you the heads up on what is available.
To give you an idea of costs one weeks training for 16 officers or one week consultancy will cost you $10,000 (That’sUS dollars not Zimbabwean! )
