Community Policing

There are many different definitions for what is referred to as community policing and there are also a number of different phrases that relate to the same concept. These include “policing with the community” and “community orientated policing”.

Community policing is a way of policing that promotes strategies, that support the use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques, to proactively address the concerns of the community including crime, social disorder, and fear of crime. Community policing has the primary aim of retaining the legitimacy of the police in the eyes of the public.

While the idea of community policing often talked about , the strategies needed to implement community policing are often poorly understood. Agencies may say “ we are doing community policing when all they are really doing is designating uniformed police officers to patrol particular areas. This is NOT community policing.

We also provide the training necessary for those involved in managing the strategy and those involved in face to face contact with the community. A key element of out training is understanding the psychology involved in addressing the needs of the community and avoiding unnecessary errors which create mistrust or hostility.
